homeless kauai
Anybody here homeless in Hawaii?

I have the urge to go and live in kauai for 3 months out of a tent, but plan on working while im out there. I know people do it, but just wondered if anyone on here has done it and give me some insight?
I understand the difference between homeless and camping. I was in kauai in march for 2 weeks camping and went back and forth between a couple campgrounds(annahola and annini). I wouldnt leave my tent at 1 spot for 3 months, and when i say work while im there, any minimum wage job is fine with me.
Seems i have taken alotta heat on this question, which honestly i am a little surprised. I trying to stay there with little impact as possible. IMO its the people who go and stay at the billion dollar resorts and build there multi million dollars homes that are destroying kauai.

Sadly, recent crackdowns on the homeless have made it more difficult for our school social workers to find the parents of our students when we need to have a meeting at school.

I’ve only been semi-homeless in Hawaii, which means I’ve had a house to petsit or a friend’s living room floor to sleep on, but semi-homelessness in Hawaii sucks, too. That’s why I work hard and pay $900 a month to rent a studio that used to be a two-car garage.

We’re really worried about how long we’ll be able to support our friends and family in Hawaii through this economic crisis. Visitor arrivals are down 10% over this time last year, and demand for homeless shelter is up 19%. The Governor has asked the Department of Education to cut the budget for the schools by 13-20% in response to falling tax revenues. I’m a tenured teacher, and people ask me if my job is safe on a regular basis. So, no, we’re not going to be waiting at the airport with a lei for you. Times are tough all over.

We protest the luxury developments as well, but the opinions of the locals without money doesn’t seem to be as important as the foreigners with the money when it comes to getting things approved. Except on Molokai, but they’re paying the price for standing up against the developers, for sure.
